Good to Know
Key things to know
- 01
ABN and business name
You'll generally need an ABN to carry on a business. If you trade under a name other than your own, you'll usually need to register it as a business name with ASIC.
- 02
Employing staff
Before paying employees, you'll need to register for PAYG withholding and set up Single Touch Payroll. In Victoria, WorkSafe insurance obligations may also apply.
- 03
Structure has long-term effects
Changing structure later can involve costs and tax consequences, so it's worth getting advice before you start.

FAQs
Common questions
General information only. Your circumstances may differ — contact us for advice specific to you.
Do I need to register for GST straight away?
Only if your GST turnover is expected to reach $75,000 or more (or you're a taxi or ride-share driver). Below that it's optional.
Should I start as a sole trader or a company?
Sole trader is simpler and cheaper; a company can offer limited liability and a flat tax rate but adds cost and complexity. The right answer depends on your circumstances.
Do I need a separate bank account?
It's not a legal requirement for sole traders, but it makes bookkeeping much easier. Companies and trusts should have their own accounts.
