Accounting for Contractors & Tradies
You're on the tools all day — we'll look after the numbers. Practical accounting for ABN contractors and trades businesses across Melbourne.
Overview
How we can help
Contractors and tradies face a particular mix of tax issues: vehicles and tools, mixed private and business use, GST, PAYG instalments, and rules about personal services income that can catch people out.
We keep it practical. We help you set up simple record-keeping that works from your phone, claim what you're entitled to, plan for tax bills and BAS, and grow from sole trader to company when the time is right.

$20,000 instant asset write-off
Small businesses with aggregated turnover under $10 million can generally immediately deduct eligible assets costing less than $20,000 each. This threshold has been made permanent from 1 July 2026.
- 02
Personal services income
If 80% or more of your income comes from one client for your personal skills and effort, the PSI rules may limit your deductions unless you pass a results test or another exemption.
- 03
Super for subcontractors
If you're paid mainly for your labour, the business engaging you may need to pay you super — even if you have an ABN.

FAQs
Common questions
General information only. Your circumstances may differ — contact us for advice specific to you.
Can I claim my ute?
If it's used for business, you can claim the business portion. Some vehicles, such as certain utes and vans designed to carry a tonne or more, are treated differently from passenger cars. Keep a logbook to support your claim.
Should I put money aside for tax?
Yes — no tax is withheld from ABN income. A simple weekly transfer to a separate account for GST and income tax prevents a painful bill at year end.
When should I become a company?
Often when profits grow, you take on staff or want to separate personal and business risk. We'll compare the numbers before you decide.
